SUMMARY:Virtual Study Club 2023/24 — Before the Buzz: Ultrasonic Treatment Planning in Dental Hygiene
DESCRIPTION:Successful ultrasonic debridement outcomes are dependant on decisions made before the clinician even steps on the ultrasonic foot pedal. This session aims to empower participants with the knowledge and confidence to develop treatment plans that incorporate ultrasonic instruments tailored to individual patient needs. The emphasis is on optimizing workflow using ultrasonic technology to reduce the daily challenges faced in dental hygiene practice.1. Prioritize the benefits of ultrasonic technology in enhancing efficiency\, patient comfort\, and treatment effectiveness over traditional hand scaling methods.2. Examine various ultrasonic tips designs\, gaining a strong foundation for strategically identifying and sequencing these instruments in treatment plans.3. Analyze real-world debridement scenarios and deepen your understanding of challenges and solutions in ultrasonic treatment planning. \nNot a 2023/24 Virtual Study Club member? Click here to sign up. \n\n\n\nPresenter / Speaker Bio\n\n\n\nDani Botbyl is an educator\, author\, and researcher and has been a trailblazer for the advancement of ultrasonic technology in dental hygiene practice and education in North America. She is credited with leading the first team of researchers to investigate the topic of ultrasonic instrumentation education in dental hygiene programs. The culmination of her knowledge and research has produced multiple publications in industry and peer-reviewed journals and textbooks. In 2018\, with her co-authors\, Dani was awarded the Canadian Journal of Dental Hygiene Research Award for Best Original Research Paper. Dani co-authored the second edition of Ultrasonic Periodontal Debridement: Theory and Technique (2023) and is a contributing author to the soon to be published sixth edition of Darby and Walsh Dental Hygiene Theory and Practice. Dani has presented hundreds of evidence-based programs to dental hygiene students\, faculty and practicing clinicians nationally and internationally\, served as the National Clinical Educator with Dentsply Sirona 2000-2023 and held a faculty position at Niagara College of Applied Arts and Technology in Welland\, Ontario Canada for over a decade. Dani’s passion for enhancing the practice of dental hygiene create learning experiences that are not to be missed!

SUMMARY:Virtual Study Club 2023/24 — Bugs\, Pus\, and Symbiosis...Oh My! Prof. Penny Hatzimanolakis
DESCRIPTION:Chronic low-grade infections in the mouth elevate systemic inflammation and have an impact on all body systems. The mouth is further linked with the rest of the body when considering the impact of numerous conditions like oral airway\, sleep apnea\, TMD and headaches\, dental caries infections\, periodontal and oral cancer\, to name a few. The understanding of the bidirectional connections is rapidly evolving\, and primary oral healthcare providers and organizations are striving to improve ways to deliver healthcare more efficiently and effectively using current\, evidence-informed methodologies. \nIt is no longer acceptable to minimize or ignore the inflammatory burden and bacterial load that is placed on the overall health of the body by oral diseases. This program will review the current scientific literature on dental diseases and their association with systemic health. The program will support the participant with screening\, approaches and management of oralsystemic connections into clinical practice to achieve comprehensive patient-centred care plans. \nEDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES \n\nIdentify the primary oral-systemic connections\nUnderstand the difference between the health status of Symbiosis or Dysbiosis\nWhat risk indicators/factors play the most significant role in oral and overall health?\nIs there a difference between leaky gut and leaky gums syndrome?\nIntroduce and discuss the various types of oral-systemic health screenings\n\nNot a 2023/24 Virtual Study Club member? Click here to sign up.
